Olfactory phantoms and scenograhy

25.08.2018

Day 9. Brought a friend along to experience "Vågar vi blunda" (Do we dare to close our eyes) a dance-music-scenography event created by Carmen Olsson (dance and choreography), Åsa Herrgård (scenography) and Harald Svensson (music) as well as the co-creatice audience. I was particularly taken by the relationship between movement in scenographic space, emerging memories of scent, and the diverging audience responses revealed in the discussion after the event. Some interesting scholarly components had been worked into the performance such as crawling and thus coming closer to understanding the early scent experiences that structure us. We also learnt that scenography can play a part in producing so called olfactory phantoms. The sea, its waves and rhythm, smell and taste became present to me during the performance when I used my sensory imagination. Scenographic wawes as phantoms, guardians of an open, not yet defined space. More about the performance here: https://www.3vaningen.se/carmen2018.html).
